Assistant Principal/Athletic Director

Rusty Bates is in his fifth year at Ardmore.  He came to AHS from Hazel Green High School in Hazel Green, AL.   He is a native of Limestone County.  Bates was a 1991 Graduate of West Limestone High School.  He and his family now reside in Ardmore. 

Personal - 

 He is married to the former Kristin George of Athens, Alabama.  She is the guidance counselor at Cedar Hill Elementary in Ardmore.  They have one child, a daughter named Lauren Elizabeth.  They have a small farm in Ardmore where they have American Quarter Horses, beef cattle, and Australian Shepherd Dogs.

History -

Bates began his coaching career in 1993 at Calhoun Community College.  He served as an assistant softball coach under Myra King.  Over the next three seasons, the duo would see Calhoun win 3 State and Region Championships.  They would also coach in the NJCAA National Championships.  Calhoun finished in the top ten all three years, which included a 2nd Place finish in the Nation. 

In 1996, Bates returned to his alma-mater, West Limestone High School, to coach football, basketball, and softball.  At West Limestone, Bates took over a second year fast-pitch softball program.  He also led the receivers/quarterbacks in football and the JV boys basketball team.  He led the Wildcats softball teams to three consecutive County, Area, and Regional Titles, along with three appearances in the State Tournament.  He was voted three times The Athens-Limestone Metro Coach of the Year.  The Wildcats won 98 games and lost 36 in the three years. The football team made two appearances in the state playoffs during his tenure there. 

In 2000, Bates headed to Hazel Green High School. He led the Trojan Softball Program for eight years.  During the time of Bates' arrival, the Hazel Green Softball program was undergoing a huge change.  After 14 years of slow-pitch softball, the change to Fast-Pitch was made.  Under Bates, they won back to back County Championships in 03 and 04, won an Area Title in 03 and 08. They earned a birth in the State Play-offs in 03, 04, 05, 06, and 08.  The Trojans also earned a birth in the State Tournament in 03.  Career Coaching Record:  321 - 173
